Although Tony grew up in
Palo Alto, CA, the hometown of the Grateful Dead, it wasn't until
his family moved to New Orleans in the early 80's that his intense
love of roots music began to take hold. It was 1983 at the New Orleans
Jazz and Heritage Festival when Tony first saw live homecooking, such
as Dr. John, the Meters, Neville Brothers, the Radiators and Rockin'
Dopsie.
Tony also fell in love with the spirit of 60's music while working
at Rock and Roll Collectibles selling used vinyl, first in the Flea
Market of the French Quarter and then in an old store front on Magazine
Street in Uptown New Orleans. Upon returning to California in the
fall of 1984, his love of one band became an obsession. Tony saw his
first Grateful Dead concert on March 9th, 1985 at the famous Berkeley
Community Theater.
Although it was also around this time Tony took his first photography
class in high school, it really wasn't until many years later when
he finally took his Canon AE-1 to the New Orleans Jazz Fest, where
he started photographing the artists he had admired from 15 years
earlier.
Now living in Boulder, Colorado and using his digital Nikon D70, Tony takes
advantage of the countless touring acts that inhabit the venerable
concert houses of Colorado. |
